Actor and writer Stephen Fry has signed a petition which calls on West Norfolk Council to abandon plans to build 380 homes on land at Gaywood.
Yesterday (Thursday), The Save Lynn’s Wild Woodland and Wetland petition had 1,825 signatures against the proposal by the council.
Protestors are against proposed plans for south of Parkway, which could see homes built either side of Howard Junior School and King’s Oak Academy.
The development would link Gaywood and the Fairstead estate in King’s Lynn which would “create one new community”.
A report supporting the application states Plantation Wood and The Rookery would be protected by “substantial green buffer zones”, existing belts of mature trees retained, some trees replaced and new trees planted. But campaigners argue the site was “King’s Lynn’s last truly wild place”.
Campaigner Jenny Walker, of Roydon, who started the online petition, has called for councillors to visit the site which she said was home to the endangered water vole and “nature’s deposit account for all the people of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk”.
The council was due to hold a special planning meeting on Monday to discuss the application but it has been postponed with another date yet to be confirmed.
