A decision on plans for a new Active Travel Hub in King’s Lynn has been postponed after councillors said they still had significant questions about the proposed scheme.
The development, planned for a site off Nar Ouse Way, would include 236 parking spaces alongside cycle storage, lockers, showers and changing facilities aimed at encouraging people to combine driving, cycling and walking for their journeys.
However, members of the council’s regeneration and development panel said they were not yet convinced about who the facility would primarily serve, how it would operate in practice or whether enough people would use it to justify the investment.
As a result, the proposal will now undergo further scrutiny before any decision is made.
The delay comes amid wider concerns about the £4.1 million project, with campaigners and some councillors questioning whether the hub would achieve its aims.
A local cycling group has argued that access arrangements may only work safely for a limited number of users, while others have questioned whether the additional parking spaces would actually reduce traffic levels in the town centre.
Some councillors also expressed concern that the facility could become a “white elephant” if demand fails to meet expectations.
Despite the concerns, supporters of the project argue it could play an important role in promoting more sustainable travel choices and improving connections between different forms of transport.
Any prolonged delay could create additional pressure on the scheme, as the funding allocated to the project must be spent by September next year or risks being lost
