A new bus stop has opened at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn NHS Foundation Trust as part of preparations for a major redevelopment of the site.
The relocated stop, which opened on 26 May, is situated closer to the hospital’s main entrance on Gayton Road, opposite the Community Diagnostic Centre.
Hospital officials say the new location will improve access for passengers, allow buses to enter and leave the site more efficiently and make it easier for patients to reach hospital services.
A new stop for the hospital’s patient buggy service has also been introduced alongside the bus stop to help people who need assistance moving around the site.
From now on, all bus services serving the hospital will use the new stop, which includes a digital timetable display providing live service updates and an audio information button for passengers with accessibility needs.
The relocation forms part of enabling works linked to a new multi-storey car park that recently received final government approval.
The six-level facility will provide more than 1,300 parking spaces and is regarded as a key project in the development of the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Once completed, it will free up land currently occupied by the main car park, allowing construction of the replacement hospital building to begin.
Peter Cox, Project Director for the New QEH programme, described the bus stop move as a small but important milestone in the wider redevelopment project.
Preparatory work for the car park is due to begin in early June, with construction of the main structure expected to start at the end of July.
The new bus stop also coincides with the introduction of a new service from local operator Lynx.
The new Loop service will connect King’s Lynn town centre, North Lynn, the Woottons, Castle Reach, Knight’s Hill, The QEH and Hardwick, improving public transport links to the hospital and surrounding areas.
