Norfolk Police Launch Seatbelt Safety Campaign

Norfolk Police are stepping up enforcement as part of a national campaign to highlight the importance of wearing a seatbelt.

The initiative, led by the National Police Chiefs’ Council, will run from 1 to 28 April and focus on reducing risky driving behaviours linked to serious and fatal collisions.

Officers will carry out increased roadside checks across the county to identify drivers and passengers not wearing seatbelts.

Despite seatbelt laws being introduced in 1983, figures show that in 2023, a quarter of people who died in car crashes on British roads were not wearing one.

Police say failure to wear a seatbelt is more common among men and younger people, particularly in commercial vehicles.

Drivers and passengers caught not wearing a seatbelt can face fines of up to £500, and motorists are responsible for ensuring children under 14 are properly restrained.

Officers say wearing a seatbelt takes seconds but can be the difference between life and death in a crash, urging everyone to buckle up on every journey.
