West Norfolk patients with an enlarged prostate can now get treated faster thanks to a new laser-led operation being available.
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn is offering EchoLaser therapy which is a 30-minute procedure which often means people can go home the same day.
It was introduced last month and has already been performed on patients.
Laser energy is delivered to the prostate for several minutes instead of them having to undergo surgery that can last an hour and means an overnight stay.
Professor Cristian Ilie, surgical consultant at The QEH, said: “I’m really pleased we are able to now offer this treatment. EchoLaser therapy takes place under local anaesthetic where you are still awake which means the amount of time a patient spends in hospital is reduced, so they can get on with their life sooner.
“This treatment also comes with fewer risks to patients, takes half of the time and importantly improves patient care and experience.”
