Sutton Bridge man takes to the skies to raise £1,200 for QEH Endoscopy Unit

A Sutton Bridge man took to the skies in a daring Wing Walk to raise £1,200 for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s Endoscopy Unit, after his wife received treatment there.

Brian Moss completed the sponsored challenge at Wickenby Airfield last month, taking on the unusual fundraiser as a way of thanking the QEH staff who cared for his wife, Dianne, during a difficult time.

Brian was inspired to raise money for the Endoscopy Unit after his wife received care from the department at the end of last year. Following her treatment and significant bowel operations, he decided he wanted to give something back to the team.

The challenge saw Brian strapped to the top wing of a flying aircraft as it took to the skies and performed a series of manoeuvres.

Despite the nerves and obvious challenges involved, Brian successfully completed the flight and exceeded his fundraising target, bringing in an impressive £1,200.

He received strong support from family and friends, as well as colleagues at Bridge Hardware in Sutton Bridge. His colleagues also organised a World Cup sweepstake to boost the fundraising total, with the £50 prize winner generously donating their winnings back to Brian’s appeal.

Explaining why he took on the challenge, Brian said: “I know so many people that have died through bowel cancer and having recently seen my wife undergo significant bowel operations at The QEH I wanted to raise money to thank all the amazing staff at the hospital for everything they did.”

The money raised will go towards supporting the QEH’s Endoscopy Unit, helping the department enhance the care and experience it provides for patients.

Helen Smith, Lead Nurse Manager for Theatre and Endoscopy at the QEH, thanked Brian and everyone who supported his fundraising.

“We’re incredibly grateful to Brian for taking on such a fantastic challenge and raising this generous amount for our Endoscopy Unit,” she said.

“It means a great deal to know that the care his wife received inspired him to give something back to the team.”

She also thanked Brian’s family, friends and colleagues for their support, saying the money would help the department continue to enhance patient care and experience.

Brian’s fundraising has turned a personal experience into support for other patients using the hospital’s Endoscopy Unit, with his Wing Walk providing a memorable way to say thank you to the staff who cared for his wife.
