Want To Be A Detective?

There is now a new way of becoming a detective in West Norfolk.

In the past, you would join as a uniformed police officer before getting the chance to specialise.

But Norfolk Police is now giving the chance for people it feels have the right skills, knowledge and experience to join a two-year training programme to earn a Level 6 diploma in Professional Policing Practice and join a detective team.

If selected, people will send their first year in uniform about what it means to be a police officer.

In year two, they will be placed with a detective team to help build their knowledge before sitting the National Investigators Exam (NIE).

The force says: “No policing experience is necessary to take on this opportunity, but it is essential that individuals have the ability and commitment to quickly absorb new skills and information. We do require applicants to hold a degree (in any subject) to qualify for the programme. The selection process will draw out applicants’ personal experiences, qualities, and aptitude to become detective constables.

Anyone successful gets a starting salary of £28,551 which will rise every year, rising to £46,044 over seven-years, plus a police pension and annual leave.

Detective Superintendent Dave Freeman said: “Our detectives are responsible for solving the most serious and complex crimes which happen in Norfolk. It is their investigative work which secures the prosecution of those who are responsible for crimes. They support some of the most vulnerable victims in the county and provide results which can be incredibly rewarding.

“The nature of the crime you deal with may change on a daily basis however the challenge and complexity will always exist. You could find yourself dealing with homicides, protecting vulnerable individuals or tackling criminality linked to county lines.

“The direct entry route provides the perfect option for those who are already decided on wanting to be a detective. This is a really exciting time for talented investigators looking to join the force.”
