People across Norfolk are being warned about a fraudulent council tax letter which attempts to trick recipients into paying money through a scam website.
The letter uses Norfolk County Council branding and falsely claims that changes have been made to council tax payments. It also includes a QR code which directs people to a fake payment portal.
Norfolk County Council has confirmed that it does not collect council tax and is urging anyone who receives the letter not to scan the QR code or make any payment through the website.
A council spokesman said: “Please be aware that this is a scam. Our Trading Standards team is investigating.”
Residents with questions about their council tax are being advised to contact their district council directly using official contact details rather than those provided in an unsolicited letter.
The warning comes amid a series of scams targeting people across Norfolk, with recent reports including bank fraud, student loan scams and nuisance cold callers.
Anyone who receives the fraudulent letter should avoid scanning the QR code, providing personal or financial details, or making any payment.
