Shakespeare Guildhall Trust – Open Day

Open Day for Volunteers at St George’s Guildhall as opening hours are extended. Shakespeare’s Guildhall Trust is on the lookout for more volunteer guides to show visitors around King’s Lynn’s historic St George’s Guildhall as visitor numbers are on the increase. To get an idea of what is involved, they are holding an open day for potential volunteers on Wednesday 25th August.

SGT re-opened the Guildhall after lockdown rules eased in June. Initially, the opening hours were restricted to only 4 hours a day from Monday to Friday but have gradually increased over recent weeks as more and more visitors have wanted to visit.

Volunteer Coordinator, Lesley Kemp said, “We have gradually increased our opening hours and have been open most days until 4pm. As a result, we are now getting many more visitors than we were before lockdown commenced. We are now planning to open on Saturdays and Sundays, as we know that is when there is the most demand from the public. To cover these extra days, we will need to recruit and train more volunteer guides.”

Anyone who can spare a couple of hours – whether its once a month or once a week – is welcome to get in touch to find out how they can help. Full training and support will be given to all volunteers and expenses will be covered. The role will appeal to anyone with a friendly outlook and an interest in working with the public.

SGT Chairman Ivor Rowlands explained, “This is an opportunity for anyone with an interest in helping promote awareness of King’s Lynn’s greatest historic treasure. St George’s Guildhall is not only the largest medieval guildhall in England, but also the country’s oldest working theatre and the only theatre in the world that can claim Shakespeare performed there. Our volunteer guides are performing a vital service, keeping the guildhall alive and accessible when there are so many visitors looking for things to do in King’s Lynn”
